Sound familiar?
If your Tujunga water heater is acting up, don’t wait for a cold morning:
No hot water, or it runs out fast now that nights are colder
Pilot light that keeps going out
Rumbling or popping from the tank
Rusty or metallic-smelling hot water
Water pooling around the base
A tankless unit (Takagi, Rinnai, Navien, Noritz) showing an error code
We’re minutes away. Get it handled today.
Why Tujunga water heaters work harder
Tujunga sits high in the foothills between the Verdugo and San Gabriel Mountains, around 1,500 feet up. Winter nights run colder here than down in the basin, so the water coming into your heater starts colder and the burner has to run longer to reach temperature. An older or scaled-up tank feels that first, which is why so many Tujunga calls come in the first cold weeks of the season.
Your water comes from LADWP, and its hardness depends on the blend. LADWP’s published monitoring data show Valley-area water from the aqueduct filtration plant at about 103 mg/L of hardness, while water from its northern Valley wells averages about 230 mg/L and runs as high as 275. The more well water in the mix, the faster scale builds on the bottom of a tank and inside a tankless heat exchanger.
Tujunga’s homes add their own quirks. The town started as the Little Landers colony in 1913 (its Bolton Hall still stands), joined Los Angeles in 1932, and many older houses were built on river-rock foundations with heaters tucked into small closets, service porches and garages. We regularly find venting, gas connectors, and strapping that don’t meet today’s code, and we fix them as part of the job.
We’ve been the Crescenta Valley’s plumber since 1997, and Tujunga is a short drive up Foothill Boulevard from our Montrose shop. When your hot water quits, you’re not waiting on a crew from across the county.

Repair or replace? A straight answer
Most Tujunga homeowners call us asking one thing: is it worth fixing? Here is how we decide, and we will tell you the same thing on site before you spend a dollar.
Tanks in Tujunga typically give 8 to 12 years, depending on how much well water is in your supply and whether the tank has ever been flushed. A tank past 10 years that is leaking from the body should be replaced, not patched.

What water heater repair and replacement cost in Tujunga
You get a written price before any work starts. No bait-and-switch, no “we’ll see when we’re done.” To give you a realistic idea before you call:
Common repairs (thermocouple, igniter, gas valve, element, thermostat, relief valve) are usually a fraction of the cost of a new heater, and we quote them on the spot.
Replacing a standard tank or converting to tankless typically runs from about $1,200 to $4,500 or more. Where you land depends on tank size or tankless model, gas line and venting changes, the location of the heater, and the permit.
Permit, seismic strapping, code updates, and haul-away of the old unit are included in the written quote, not added later.
